NOMS EN EMPLOI PRÉDICATIF ET NEXUS DANS LA POÉSIE DE PIERRE REVERDY

Abstract : This paper studies nominal sentences in Pierre Reverdy's hundred poems. We first define our criteria for delimiting sentences in these texts without punctuation. Then we argue that instead of describing entities these sentences present series of events which are the background of those meant in the verbal sentences. Most of the nominal sentences can be analysed as nexus: the NP is the nucleus of a sentence-focus structure, but serves as a support for a second predicate located in a participial or prepositional phrase or in a relative clause which attaches stage level properties to the NP referent. Though literary they are, these sentences can be included in the big family of presentational constructions with secondary predication. The last part of the paper analyses the pragmatic and stylistic role of such nominal sentences.
